From 10 months to global defense: the rapid evolution of a missile system
In short: In just ten months, Boeing moved from a concept to delivering a functional air defense system for the U.S. Army. Today, this mobile platform protects against everything from high-altitude cruise missiles to tiny drones weighing as little as 2 kilograms.
Developed in the 1980s as a private venture by Boeing, the AN/TWQ-1 Avenger was designed for rapid deployment. Initial testing began in May 1984 at the Yakima Training Center in Washington state. During these early trials, operators who had never fired a missile before achieved direct hits while the vehicle was moving at 20 miles per hour and again during night firing. By February 1990, the system was deemed operationally effective, replacing older M163 and M167 VADS units.
The Avenger is highly modular, designed to adapt to shifting threats. While its primary role involves firing FIM-92 Stinger missiles from two pods—each holding up to four fire-and-forget rockets—it has been modified for diverse missions. The 'Up-Gun' variant replaced a missile pod with a .50 caliber machine gun to provide 360-degree ground defense in Iraq. Other iterations have explored laser-guided Starstreak missiles, French Mistral missiles, and even Directed Energy Weapons (DEW) to counter low-hovering helicopters and small UAVs.
The system's versatility has seen it deployed in the Persian Gulf War, Bosnia, Afghanistan, and Iraq. It has even served as an observation platform during domestic protests at Standing Rock and was mounted on a Mistral-class amphibious assault ship for naval exercises. While the U.S. Army is transitioning toward newer platforms like the IM-SHORAD to replace aging Humvee models, the Avenger remains a significant piece of military history, having seen over 1,100 units built globally.
