A daring rescue in a reservoir launched a major political career in India
In short: Anandiben Patel was a school teacher when she leapt into a reservoir to save two drowning students. This act of bravery earned her a presidential award and caught the eye of political leaders, leading her from the classroom to the governorship of India's most populous state, Uttar Pradesh.
Born in 1941 in the Mehsana district of Gujarat, Anandiben Patel began her professional life as an educator. She taught mathematics and science at Mohiniba Kanya Vidyalaya in Ahmedabad, eventually rising to become the school's principal. Her transition into public life was unconventional; in 1987, while on a school picnic, she jumped into the Sardar Sarovar reservoir to rescue two students. This act of heroism, which earned her a president's bravery award, served as the catalyst for her entry into the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Patel’s political ascent was rapid. After joining the party in 1987, she served in the Rajya Sabha before winning her first assembly election in 1998. As Gujarat's Education Minister, she spearheaded initiatives like 'Shala Praveshotsav' to boost school enrollment. Her administrative career culminated in 2014 when she succeeded Narendra Modi as the first female Chief Minister of Gujarat. She held this position until 2016, stepping down as she approached her 75th birthday.
Since leaving the Chief Minister's office, Patel has held several gubernatorial roles. She served as the Governor of Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh before being appointed the 20th Governor of Uttar Pradesh in 2019. As the second woman to hold this office in Uttar Pradesh, she currently stands as the state's longest-serving governor. Her career, spanning over three decades of public service, reflects a shift from grassroots educational leadership to high-level governance across multiple Indian states.
