In short: Amtrak is replacing its aging fleet with Airo, a new class of high-speed trainsets built by Siemens. By utilizing fixed-drawbar configurations and hybrid propulsion, these trains aim to slash journey times and maintenance needs, allowing seamless transitions between electrified and non-electrified tracks without the traditional, time-consuming locomotive changes.

The Airo program, initiated in 2019, represents a significant shift in how Amtrak manages its rolling stock. Unlike the current fleet, which relies on individual cars that are frequently coupled and decoupled, Airo trainsets are permanently coupled using fixed drawbars. This design choice is intended to reduce equipment wear and streamline maintenance, as the entire trainset can be serviced as a single unit rather than requiring individual car inspections on disparate schedules.

Central to the Airo's versatility is its hybrid propulsion system. The "B" class trainsets, for instance, utilize a Siemens Charger ALC-42E diesel-electric locomotive paired with an Auxiliary Power Vehicle (APV). When operating on electrified lines, the APV draws power from overhead lines via pantographs and distributes it to traction motors in both the APV and the locomotive. By housing the heavy transformer in the APV rather than the locomotive, engineers have successfully distributed the weight across two cars, mitigating the track wear often associated with heavy dual-mode locomotives.

The fleet is divided into three primary types—B, C, and D—tailored to specific route requirements. The "C" sets are currently part of a pilot program to test battery technology for navigating the Empire Connection tunnel in New York, while the "D" sets are dedicated to diesel-only operation on the Amtrak Cascades route. With the first trainset unveiled in February 2026 and service rollouts continuing through 2030, these trainsets are poised to modernize state-supported and Northeast Corridor routes, supported by funding from the 2021 Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act.

This transition requires more than just new hardware; it necessitates extensive renovations to existing maintenance facilities to accommodate the fixed-set architecture. By moving away from the operational inefficiencies of the Amfleet I and Horizon coaches, Amtrak aims to improve overall safety and reliability. As the rollout progresses, the success of these trainsets will depend on their ability to handle diverse infrastructure, from the overhead wires of the Northeast Regional to the battery-dependent tunnels of New York.
