From homelessness to culinary stardom: the unlikely journey of Andrew Zimmern
In short: Before becoming a world-renowned television personality and James Beard Award winner, Andrew Zimmern faced extreme hardship. Between 1990 and 1991, he struggled with severe addiction and homelessness, surviving by stealing purses from cafes to fund his survival.
Born in 1961 to Caren and Robert Zimmern in New York City, Andrew Zimmern's path to culinary fame was far from linear. After attending the Dalton School and graduating from Vassar College in 1984 with a degree in History and Art History, his career took a dramatic turn. Between 1990 and 1991, Zimmern experienced a period of homelessness caused by severe drug and alcohol addiction, during which he survived by stealing purses from cafes to sell their contents. He was raised on the Upper East Side within a Jewish family. After his studies, he worked at several New York fine dining establishments as a general manager or executive chef.
His recovery began in 1992 when he moved to Minnesota and entered the Hazelden Treatment Center, where he continues to volunteer today. Following his recovery, he achieved significant professional success, notably serving as the executive chef of Café Un Deux Trois in Minneapolis from 1992 to 1997. His work there earned high ratings from various publications, including the Minneapolis Star Tribune and Minnesota Monthly. He later opened a Chinese restaurant called Lucky Cricket in St. Louis Park, Minnesota.
Zimmern eventually transitioned into a major media presence, most notably through the Travel Channel series Bizarre Foods, which premiered on November 1, 2006. His expertise has been recognized with four James Beard Foundation Awards, earned in 2010, 2012, 2013, and 2017. Outside of television, he acts as a United Nations World Food Programme Global Goodwill Ambassador and loudly promotes sustainable global food systems. The media personality has also hosted various radio programmes, including Chowhounds and The Andrew Zimmern Show. Additionally, he has served as an international spokesman for Elite Destination Homes and Travel Leaders.
