Anhui is a Chinese province defined by its rivers, ancient history, and rapid growth.
In short: Located in East China, Anhui is a land of dramatic contrasts. From the fertile Huai River plains in the north to the rugged mountains of the south, this inland province has evolved from a Neolithic hub into a modern industrial powerhouse, despite a history marked by both innovation and tragedy.
Established in 1667 during the Qing dynasty, Anhui derives its name from the cities of Anqing and Huizhou. Its history stretches back much further; archaeological findings in Fanchang County suggest human habitation 20,000 years ago. By the Neolithic period, the region hosted sophisticated settlements, including a 4,500-year-old city discovered in Guzhen County in 2013, complete with a city wall and moat.
The province's geography is bisected by the Yangtze River, which historically hampered transport until the first bridge was completed in 1995. This divide mirrors the province's cultural and economic landscape. While northern Anhui shares ties with the North China Plain, the south features unique cultural spheres and the Huangshan mountains, home to Lotus Peak, the province's highest point at 1,873 metres. Today, Anhui is a key part of the Yangtze River Delta Economic Area, leveraging industrial hubs like Hefei and Wuhu to close the wealth gap with its more prosperous neighbors.
Anhui’s modern trajectory has been volatile. In 1938, a catastrophic decision to breach a Yellow River dam to impede Japanese forces resulted in hundreds of thousands of deaths. Following 1949, the province underwent significant industrialization, including the Third Front campaign to establish defense industries. While it has become a leader in white goods manufacturing and high-tech development, the province faces modern challenges, including a highly unbalanced gender ratio, with a 2009 study reporting 138 boys for every 100 girls in the 1–4 age group.
