Paraguay's Mother of Cities seeded Buenos Aires twice over
Asunción, on the Paraguay River near the Pilcomayo confluence, is Paraguay's capital and the Río de la Plata Basin's oldest continually inhabited Spanish city—hence Mother of Cities. Colonial columns left from here to refound Buenos Aires and other towns. It forms an autonomous capital district outside any department.
The official name, Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, comes from the Cabildo's founding document of 16 September 1541 and honours the Virgin Mary's assumption into heaven; in Guarani the city is called Paraguay, a name later given to the whole country. Conquistador Juan de Ayolas may have first seen the site while pushing up the Paraguay River toward the mines of Upper Peru. When natives destroyed Buenos Aires in 1542, its Spanish settlers fled here, making Asunción the hub of a province that took in parts of Brazil, Paraguay and northeastern Argentina.
A 1731 uprising led by José de Antequera y Castro, among the earliest revolts against Spanish rule, failed but hinted at a growing independent spirit. After independence Gaspar Rodríguez de Francia, in power from 1813 to 1840, built roads and named the streets. The Paraguayan War, which many historians say killed two-thirds of the population, left city and country stagnant, and recovery came slowly with immigrants from Europe and the Ottoman Empire around the turn of the century. Trams ran from 1871, electric ones from 1913, until about 1995, and during the Chaco War with Bolivia from 1932 to 1935 the city cared for the wounded.
Until the early 1980s it was the only Paraguayan city with more than 100,000 people. In March 1991, two years after the coup that ended Alfredo Stroessner's almost 35-year rule, the presidents of Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay and Paraguay signed the Treaty of Asunción here, creating Mercosur. The 2022 census counted 462,241 residents, with more than 2.3 million in Greater Asunción, and the Globalization and World Cities Research Network rates it a Gamma city.
