Restoring Himalayan masterpieces in one of Ladakh's most remote reaches
In short: High in the mountains, a hidden monastery houses a unique collection of ancient Buddhist art. This video follows a dedicated restoration project aimed at preserving these fragile treasures for future generations.
Located at an altitude of 3,700m to 3,800m, Matho is a monastery that remains off the standard tourist path in Ladakh. It houses a distinct collection of bronze statuettes and tangkas—traditional linen paintings. For two years, French art expert Nelly Rieuf has led a team to restore these works and establish a museum.
The project involves complex logistics due to the harsh environment and requires significant funding. To ensure the community is involved, Rieuf trained local village women in the craft of restoration while balancing the ongoing religious life of the monastery, which centers on an annual festival.
