The radical return of a tribe to their ancestral caves
In short: After being forced into urban poverty, the Taaw’t Bato people are making a daring choice: abandoning city life to return to the jungles of Palawan. This documentary follows one family's journey to reclaim their traditional way of life.
Discovered in 1978 on the Philippine island of Palawan, the Taaw’t Bato are a semi-nomadic group who historically survived by hunting bats and fishing. During the rainy season, they traditionally sought refuge in giant natural caves to escape typhoons.
Following government efforts to make the tribe sedentary, many families moved to urban areas where they faced extreme poverty. Now, dozens of families are choosing to reverse this transition. The documentary captures the challenges of this move, as elders revive customs and youths learn survival skills needed to reach their ancestral caves once again.
