How a German city turned its water supply into a UNESCO World Heritage site
In short: Augsburg is defined by its water. Since the Middle Ages, the city has engineered a complex network of canals, towers, and power plants to harness the Lech and Wertach rivers. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2019, this massive technical achievement remains a living monument to human ingenuity.
The Augsburg Water Management System is not a single structure, but a sprawling collection of 22 distinct technical and architectural assets. Recognized by UNESCO on July 6, 2019, this site showcases centuries of innovation in hydraulic engineering. The system includes Germany's oldest waterworks and water tower, alongside groundwater-fed wells and a series of ten historic hydroelectric power plants. These sites are scattered across the city and surrounding districts, with the northernmost facility, the Meitingen power plant, located approximately 22 kilometers from the city center.
At the heart of this system lies an extensive network of watercourses, including the Lech and Wertach canals and spring-fed streams in the city forest. This intricate web acts as a connective tissue, linking all 22 properties into a single, coherent protected area covering roughly 113 hectares. Beyond the functional infrastructure, the system also preserves the aesthetic history of the region, incorporating numerous decorative Renaissance-era fountains that reflect the city's cultural prosperity.
To ensure the preservation of this industrial landscape, the site is encased in a buffer zone spanning about 3,204 hectares. This zone includes specific historic districts like the Lechviertel and Jakobervorstadt, as well as the city forest, which was added at the recommendation of ICOMOS to protect vital headwater streams. By integrating these diverse elements—from deep-well technology to urban planning and artistic design—the Augsburg system provides a comprehensive look at how a city has managed its most essential resource across different eras of history.
