A high-speed migration from coastal curves to city streets
In short: The Australian motorcycle Grand Prix is undergoing a major relocation. After spending nearly three decades navigating the coastal curves of Phillip Island, this premier racing event will transition to an urban setting in Adelaide starting in 2027, moving from a dedicated circuit to a street-based layout in the city centre.
The Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit, situated southeast of Melbourne, acted as Australia's primary motorcycle racing hub for almost thirty years. From 1997 until October 2026, it hosted the FIM Grand Prix motorcycle racing season's Australian leg. However, a shift in government priorities and infrastructure plans has triggered a move to South Australia. Following the Victorian Government's rejection of a proposal to host MotoGP in Melbourne's Albert Park, Premier Peter Malinauskas announced that Adelaide would take over from 2027 onwards.
The upcoming transition is not just a change of scenery but a significant architectural shift. The new venue will be constructed based on the original Adelaide Grand Prix Street Circuit, utilizing the city centre and the eastern Park Lands. This marks a departure from the dedicated circuit model toward an urban street racing environment. The event's history is marked by various venues, including Eastern Creek in Sydney and the iconic Mount Panorama in Bathurst.
The race has faced modern hurdles, including cancellations in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It also carries a complex legacy; during its time at Mount Panorama, it was the site of the 'Bathurst motorcycle race riots' between 1980 and 1985. These disturbances led to strict alcohol regulations by the Bathurst Regional Council that impacted other major events like the Bathurst 1000, highlighting how high-speed motorsport can shape local policy and public order.
