The 'Avengers assemble' sequence in Avengers: Endgame (2019) was not part of the original script. Early drafts featured characters returning immediately without a grand entrance, a choice co-writer Christopher Markus felt destroyed the film's momentum. To fix this, directors Anthony and Joe Russo designed a 'cavalry' moment where heroes arrive via magical portals opened by Dr. Stephen Strange and other sorcerers from across Earth and the galaxy.
The sequence was meticulously choreographed to evoke specific emotions. Characters returned in the order they perished during the 2018 'Blip,' with Peter Parker arriving last for maximum impact. The Russo brothers specifically chose Wakanda as the first portal location because it was where Sam Wilson died in the previous film, creating a narrative callback. Even the delivery of Captain America's iconic rallying cry was debated; while Chris Evans initially considered screaming it, the directors opted for a quieter, more interesting delivery that emphasized the gravity of the moment.
Technically, the scene was a feat of visual effects by Weta Digital. They had to create computer-generated environments that 'locked together' with the real camera shots of the Avengers Compound to ensure correct parallax and dimensional depth. The score, composed by Alan Silvestri, was also custom-built for this moment. It avoided individual character themes—which were briefly considered as a nod to professional wrestling entrances—in favor of an anthemic, repeating structure that grew in scale until it merged into the primary Avengers theme at the final command.
