In short: Once a quiet agricultural settlement defined by alfalfa fields and the Agua Fria River, Avondale has evolved into a rapidly expanding residential hub. This Arizona city, which grew from a small stage stop into a modern suburb, now serves as a key player in the Phoenix metropolitan area's ongoing development.

The history of Avondale began in the late 1860s when William G. Moore settled near the Agua Fria River. By the 1880s, he had established the Coldwater Stage Station, a vital supply point for travelers moving between Tucson, northern Arizona, and California. The area was originally known as Coldwater, named for the river and a local spring, but the name was eventually replaced by Avondale, taken from a nearby ranch. The city was officially incorporated in December 1946.

For decades, the region remained a sparsely populated farming community focused on cotton and alfalfa. However, the landscape shifted dramatically after 1980. Avondale transitioned into a major bedroom suburb for Phoenix, experiencing rapid residential and commercial growth. Between 2000 and 2020, the population surged from 35,883 to 89,334. Recent projections suggest the city is on track to exceed 100,000 residents by 2030, driven by a growth rate of over 114% during the last decade.

Today, Avondale is a modern city covering 47.9 square miles, though only a tiny fraction of that area is water. It sits at the intersection of major transit routes, including Interstate 10, which connects residents to downtown Phoenix. While the city embraces new development, it maintains a connection to its roots through the Old Town area on Western Avenue, which preserves the historic business district and supports small, independent enterprises. The city also hosts the Phoenix Raceway, a mile-long oval that has become a centerpiece of the local economy and culture.
