How a Moravian cobbler built a global empire of company towns and mass-produced shoes.
In short: Founded in 1894, the Bata Corporation revolutionized footwear by embracing American mass-production techniques. Beyond the factory floor, the company built entire self-sufficient towns for its workers, complete with schools, hospitals, and cinemas. Today, this family-owned giant operates in over 70 countries, having sold over 14 billion pairs of shoes.
The Bata story began in the Moravian town of Zlín, Austria-Hungary, where Tomáš Baťa, his brother Antonín, and sister Anna founded their shoe company in 1894. Facing financial hardship in 1895, Tomáš pivoted to canvas footwear, a move that fueled rapid growth. By 1904, inspired by American industrial methods, he traveled to Lynn, Massachusetts, to study mechanized production. Upon returning to Zlín, he introduced the 'Baťovky'—an affordable, lightweight shoe for the working class—which became the foundation of the company's success.
Bata’s influence extended far beyond manufacturing. During the economic crises following World War I, Tomáš implemented radical social policies, including profit-sharing and price reductions, to keep his workforce employed. This evolved into the 'Baťaville' model: company-owned towns across the globe, from Canada to India, providing housing, education, and welfare services. By 1938, the group employed over 65,000 people worldwide. The company also pioneered business aviation, systematically using aircraft to transport maintenance crews and personnel to its far-flung operations.
The company faced immense turbulence during the 20th century. Following the death of Tomáš in a 1932 plane crash, leadership passed to his half-brother Jan Antonín and son Thomas J. Bata. The firm suffered significant losses during World War II, including the seizure of its Eastern European assets by communist governments. Despite these setbacks, the company rebuilt from a new base in the West, eventually moving its headquarters to Toronto in 1964 and later to Lausanne in 2004. Today, Bata remains a massive global entity, managing 21 production facilities and thousands of shops across five continents.
