The Massachusetts city that once shod the Continental Army
In short: Before it was a hub for jet engines and Marshmallow Fluff, Lynn was a global powerhouse in footwear. At its peak, this industrial center produced over a million pairs of shoes every single day, driven by a legacy of mechanization and intense labor struggles.
Beginning as early as 1635, Lynn established itself as a vital center for tanning and shoemaking. This industry was so significant that the footwear produced here was used by soldiers of the Continental Army during the American Revolution. The city's identity was so deeply tied to this craft that a colonial boot remains a central feature of its official seal.
The industry reached a global zenith in the early 20th century. Supported by the mechanization efforts of Jan Ernst Matzeliger, an African-American immigrant, 234 local factories were capable of churning out more than one million pairs of shoes daily. However, the era of mass production eventually waned, leading to the closure of the final shoe factory in 1981.
This industrial spirit paved the way for further technological leaps. In 1883, local manufacturers invested in the early electric industry, leading to the formation of the Thomson-Houston Electric Company. This entity eventually merged with the Edison Electric Company in 1892 to create General Electric. The lineage of this innovation continues today through GE Aviation’s jet engine manufacturing in Lynn.
The city's history is also marked by intense social shifts. In 1860, Lynn was the site of the New England Shoemakers Strike, one of the earliest major labor protests in the United States, as workers marched to protest wage cuts. Alongside this industrial grit, the city has been a sanctuary for many, including Frederick Douglass, who lived there as a fugitive from 1841 to 1848.
