German counter-attacks fail to reclaim the Nijmegen salient in the Netherlands
In short: Following the failed Operation Market Garden, German forces launched a desperate offensive to reclaim lost ground. Despite coordinated efforts by elite Panzer corps, they faced a stubborn British defense on 'the Island,' ultimately failing to break the Allied bridgehead despite intense aerial and infantry assaults.
In the aftermath of Operation Market Garden, a narrow Allied salient stretched from the Belgian border across the south-east of the Netherlands. This area, situated between the Rhine and Waal rivers, became known to the Allies as 'the Island.' To secure this position, General Ivor Thomas commanded an ad hoc British force, including the 5th and 8th Armoured Brigades and the 69th Infantry Brigade, to defend the Betuwe.
German High Command, led by General Walther Model, viewed the Allied bridgehead as a severe threat that could serve as a springboard to cut off the German 15th Army. On 25 September, Hitler issued a Führer Directive ordering the destruction of Allied forces in the Nijmegen–Arnhem area. To execute this, Model tasked Wilhelm Bittrich and the II SS Panzer Korps with a coordinated counter-offensive involving the 9th and 116th Panzer Divisions.
The German effort faced significant logistical hurdles. The 9th and 116th Panzer Divisions were delayed by Allied bombing and petrol shortages, and many units arrived without their tank support. Even a specialized attempt by German frogmen on 28 September to destroy the Nijmegen bridges via explosives was only a partial success; while the railway bridge was rendered unusable, the road bridge suffered only slight damage. Despite heavy casualties in infantry and tanks, the British managed to repel the attacks and eventually recaptured lost ground.
The struggle for the salient diverted critical resources from other fronts. The 21st Army Group, already committed to defending the area, had to provide additional resources for the Battle of the Scheldt to open the port of Antwerp.
