In short: Located at the intersection of Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Goa, Belgaum is a strategic hub defined by its military history and a long-standing border dispute. Once a colonial cantonment, the city now serves as a secondary capital for Karnataka, even as its linguistic and political identity remains fiercely contested.

Founded in the 12th century by the Ratta dynasty, Belgaum—originally known as Venugram, or 'village of bamboo'—has been a coveted territory for centuries. It passed through the hands of the Yadavas, the Delhi Sultanate, the Vijayanagara Empire, and the Bijapur Sultanate, eventually becoming a vital military installation under the British Raj. Its proximity to Portuguese-controlled Goa made it an ideal site for cantonments and training centers, a legacy that persists today with the presence of the Maratha Light Infantry Regimental Centre and the CoBRA School of Jungle Warfare.

The modern tension surrounding the city stems from the 1956 States Reorganisation Act, which placed the district within the newly formed Mysore State—later renamed Karnataka. Because the region has a significant Marathi-speaking population, the state of Maharashtra has long claimed the area. This dispute has led to decades of political friction, including the 2005 dissolution of the Belgaum City Corporation after it passed a resolution favoring a merger with Maharashtra, and ongoing legal battles currently pending before the Supreme Court.

Despite these political complexities, Belgaum has evolved into a significant economic and educational center. It is home to the Visvesvaraya Technological University, which oversees over 208 colleges, and hosts India's first private aerospace Special Economic Zone. The city’s identity remains a unique blend of Karnataka, Konkan, and Maharashtrian influences, reflected in its diverse cuisine—ranging from Jolada Rotti to specialized biryanis—and its role as a critical transit point for North Karnataka’s trade with major hubs like Pune and Bangalore.
