In short: Founded in 2008, Bellator MMA rose to become the second-largest mixed martial arts promotion in the United States. Once defined by its signature season-long tournament format, the brand underwent massive structural shifts, including ownership by Paramount Global and a final acquisition by the Professional Fighters League before ceasing operations.

Bellator MMA, named after the Latin word for 'warrior', began its journey in 2009 with its first event. Under its founder and original CEO, Bjorn Rebney, the promotion became famous for a distinct competitive structure: season-long, single-elimination tournaments designed to crown world champions in various weight classes. This format was a cornerstone of the brand until 2015, when, under the leadership of Scott Coker, the promotion transitioned toward a more traditional schedule of single-fight events. The brand also launched a sibling kickboxing promotion in 2016. This venture held its debut event in April of that year.

The promotion's business history is marked by significant corporate movements. In December 2011, Viacom (now Paramount Global) acquired majority ownership. For years, Bellator's media presence was tied to Viacom-owned networks, including MTV2, Spike, and later Paramount Network. However, the landscape shifted in late 2023 when Showtime announced it would discontinue its sports division. This led to the acquisition of Bellator by the Professional Fighters League (PFL) on November 20, 2023. Broadcasting rights in Brazil were managed by Grupo Globo starting in 2023. Additionally, the BBC provided coverage for viewers in the United Kingdom.

The end of the Bellator era arrived swiftly following the PFL takeover. On January 15, 2025, PFL executives announced that the Bellator promotion would cease operations entirely, with the rosters of both organizations being consolidated. While the brand was intended to live on through the 'Bellator Champions Series' under new media rights with TNT Sports, the original promotion's lifecycle concluded as its fighters moved into the PFL ecosystem. The PFL had previously planned a mega event for 2024. This showcase was intended to pit champions from both organisations against each other.
