In short: Since 2009, the Belgian Pro League has defined itself through high-stakes playoff rounds that often decided championships in the final moments. However, following a decision in February 2025, the league will abandon this format starting in the 2026–27 season, expanding to 18 teams and returning to a traditional league structure.

The Belgian Pro League, established in 1895 by the Royal Belgian Football Association, is the pinnacle of the nation's football system. Its history is marked by constant structural evolution, from the early round-robin tournaments to the introduction of promotion and relegation in 1906. Over 78 clubs have competed in the top flight, with RSC Anderlecht standing as the most successful, holding 34 titles. Other historic powerhouses include Club Brugge with 20 titles, Union Saint-Gilloise with 12, and Standard Liège with 10.

The 2009–10 season introduced a controversial playoff format, which initially faced criticism for its complexity and departure from standard European league models. Despite this, the format was praised for generating excitement and late-season drama. The league also implemented a professional licensing system in 2001–02 to ensure financial stability and stadium security, mandating that clubs meet strict criteria to participate. This era also saw significant shifts in media rights, with contracts evolving from the €36 million deals of the mid-2000s to the global agreements managed by Eleven Sports starting in 2020.

The upcoming 2026–27 transition to an 18-team league without playoffs is a direct response to the increasing demands of the international calendar. UEFA competition redesigns have added significant pressure to the season, necessitating a reduction in total matchdays. While the playoff system served as a hallmark of Belgian football for nearly 20 years, the clubs ultimately could not reach a consensus on a format that balanced the excitement of playoffs with the need for a lighter schedule. This shift marks the end of a distinct era in Belgian sports, returning the competition to a more traditional, linear format.
