The secret life of a band that wasn't supposed to exist
In short: Conor Oberst and Phoebe Bridgers didn't set out to form a superduo. They were simply two friends sharing a mutual admiration for the Replacements, eventually creating a project designed to escape the expectations of their own individual identities. It was a deliberate exercise in sonic freedom.
The collaboration between Conor Oberst and Phoebe Bridgers began in July 2016 at a secret showcase in Los Angeles. After Oberst was told Bridgers considered him her favorite songwriter in the city, he invited her to perform. Their chemistry was immediate; she opened for his European Ruminations tour in January 2017, and they spent the next two years weaving their styles together through various festivals and joint appearances. The genesis of Better Oblivion Community Center was rooted in a specific musical aesthetic. After Bridgers complimented an Oberst cover of a Replacements song, Oberst suggested they form a band to emulate that specific sound. Interestingly, the project was initially conceived as a creative outlet rather than a commercial venture. Bridgers noted that Oberst often dreams up "fake bands," and they originally intended the material for solo records or third parties. It wasn't until they had written about five songs that the reality of a joint project set in. To protect the integrity of their work, the duo intentionally sought a separate name to avoid being pigeonholed by their existing fanbases. This philosophy extended to their 2019 debut release. They bypassed traditional promotion, opting for cryptic brochures and a phone hotline instead of singles. Bridgers explained this tactic was meant to prevent listeners from making assumptions about the record's cohesive sound, given the diverse nature of the tracks. After a brief tour in 2019, the pair returned to their primary solo projects, though they occasionally reunite for special performances.
