From MySpace charts to 2x Platinum, the rise of a neon pop-punk icon
In short: Metro Station didn't just find success; they were discovered by an intern scanning MySpace Music charts. Their journey from underground favorites to Billboard Hot 100 hits serves as a masterclass in how digital subcultures can propel indie acts into the mainstream.
The band’s origins are rooted in a chance meeting on the set of Hannah Montana in 2005. Singer Mason Musso and bassist/guitarist Trace Cyrus—whose sister is Miley Cyrus—decided to form a group based on shared musical interests. They quickly recruited keyboardist Blake Healy from Synthetic Joy and drummer Anthony Improgo, who joined after their song "Seventeen Forever" gained significant traction on MySpace Music. Due to such immense online fame, a Columbia Records intern noticed them after they reached the summit of the MySpace Music Unsigned Band rankings.
After signing with Columbia and RED Ink in late 2006, the group moved to New York City to record their self-titled debut album. Their sound was a deliberate blend of synth-pop, power pop, and emo pop, drawing heavy inspiration from acts like The Postal Service, Depeche Mode, and New Order. Critics frequently compared their songwriting to Panic! at the Disco. This creative direction culminated in the 2008 hit "Shake It," which peaked at number ten on the Billboard Hot 100 and was certified 2x Platinum by the RIAA.
The band's trajectory was marked by significant internal friction. In March 2010, personal disputes between Musso and Cyrus led to an indefinite hiatus; Musso retained the rights to the name while Cyrus launched a solo project called Ashland High. However, the group experienced several cycles of reunion. Cyrus returned in 2014 for the album Savior (2015), and they reunited again in 2019 before eventually moving toward separate projects in 2021. Today, Musso continues music under the name Social Order while Cyrus remains a solo artist.
Metro Station serves as a notable example of the "MySpace band" era, where underground digital communities acted as the primary gatekeepers for new talent. Their ability to bridge the gap between niche scene music and mainstream commercial success—selling over 87,000 copies of their debut in the U.S. alone—highlights a pivotal moment in the evolution of independent music marketing.
