How a Dutch immigrant became British Columbia's most controversial and populist political figure
In short: Bill Vander Zalm rose from a tulip bulb salesman to the 28th premier of British Columbia. His career was defined by social conservatism, high-profile legal battles, and a populist style that once swept the province. Yet, his tenure ended in a scandal that reshaped the region's entire political landscape.
Born in the Netherlands in 1934, Bill Vander Zalm emigrated to Canada after World War II. He eventually settled in Surrey, where he transitioned from a nursery owner to a municipal politician. His early career was marked by a firm stance against welfare fraud, a theme that persisted when he joined the BC Social Credit Party and became minister of human resources in 1975. His confrontational style often invited controversy, including a famous 1978 libel case involving a political cartoon that depicted him as a sadist.
In 1986, Vander Zalm succeeded Bill Bennett as premier, riding a wave of public support known as Vandermania. His administration took a distinctly social conservative turn, clashing with activists over health legislation and refusing to fund the 1990 Gay Games. His time in office was ultimately cut short by a conflict-of-interest investigation regarding the sale of his theme park, Fantasy Gardens. Though he was later acquitted of criminal breach of trust, the scandal severely damaged the Social Credit Party, which collapsed shortly after his resignation in 1991.
Vander Zalm remained a potent political force long after leaving the premier's office. In 2009, he emerged as the face of the Fight HST campaign, successfully mobilizing voters to petition for a referendum on the Harmonized Sales Tax. His efforts led to a 2011 vote where 55% of 1.6 million voters chose to abolish the tax, demonstrating his enduring ability to tap into populist sentiment. Despite later legal setbacks, such as a 2012 defamation judgment, his career remains a study in the volatility of political power and the lasting influence of a single, determined individual.
