In short: Birnbeck Pier is a masterpiece of Victorian engineering that survived a secret life as a weapons testing base. Now, a massive restoration project aims to rescue this Grade II* listed landmark from the brink of loss and return it to the public.

Eugenius Birch drafted the plans for Birnbeck Pier, which debuted in 1867 as a distinct Bristol Channel maritime feature. It is the only pier in the United Kingdom that connects the mainland to an island—the 1.2-hectare Birnbeck Island. Its architectural significance is underscored by its Grade II* listing, a status shared by only six other piers in the country.

The pier's history is marked by dramatic shifts in utility. While it served as a popular Victorian destination for funfairs and steamer ferries, it was requisitioned by the Admiralty during World War II. Renamed HMS Birnbeck, it became a secret base for the Directorate of Miscellaneous Weapons Development, where it was used to conduct trials on the infamous 'bouncing bomb' designed by Barnes Wallis.

Following the war, the site entered a period of decline, eventually closing to the public in 1994 due to safety concerns. The deterioration was so severe that it was placed on the National Heritage at Risk Register in 1998. In 2023, North Somerset Council secured the site to begin a phased restoration. This complex project, supported by over £44 million in funding from sources including the UK government and the National Lottery Heritage Fund, aims to stabilize the structure and regenerate the local area.

The restoration is being executed in distinct phases: emergency safety works were completed in December 2024, landside building work began in summer 2025, and the restoration of the pier structure itself is scheduled to start by the end of 2025. The project seeks to balance the preservation of its historic engineering with a vision for a sustainable, modern visitor destination.
