How a humble fishing hamlet became the world's longest pleasure pier city
In short: Southend-on-Sea began as a collection of fishermen's huts at the edge of a village. Today, it stands as a city defined by the world's longest pleasure pier, a history of wartime fortification, and a transformation from a genteel Georgian resort into a bustling commercial hub for modern commuters.
First recorded in 1309 as Stratende, the settlement remained a quiet hamlet of fishermen and farmers until the late 18th century. Its evolution into a seaside resort was spurred by royal patronage, including visits from Princess Caroline of Brunswick in the early 1800s. To solve the problem of mudflats that prevented boats from docking at low tide, local leaders campaigned for a pier, which received royal assent in 1829. By 1903, the pier attracted one million visitors annually, cementing the town's status as a premier destination.
The 20th century brought dramatic shifts. During both World Wars, Southend became a critical military asset. It served as a mustering point for D-Day convoys, hosted anti-aircraft batteries, and saw its pier requisitioned as HMS Leigh. Following the war, the town experienced a massive surge in tourism, with pier visitors peaking at 7 million in 1950. However, as the British public began favoring foreign holidays, the town pivoted toward commercial development, leading to the demolition of Victorian structures to make way for the Victoria Circus Shopping Centre in 1970.
Southend's identity has remained fluid, transitioning from a health resort to a dormitory town for London, and finally to city status in 2022. This honor was granted in memory of Sir David Amess, the Member of Parliament for Southend West who was murdered in 2021. Today, the city balances its heritage as a seaside attraction with its role as a dense, modern urban center, standing as a testament to centuries of reinvention.
