In short: Founded in 1991 by two high school brothers, Vicarious Visions grew from a small startup into a powerhouse behind iconic franchises like Tony Hawk, Crash Bandicoot, and Skylanders. Today, the studio operates as Blizzard Albany, marking a decades-long evolution through acquisitions, technological innovation, and a major shift in corporate identity.

The studio began in 1991 when brothers Karthik and Guha Bala started developing games while still in high school. By the late 1990s, the company had attracted the attention of experienced investors like Michael Marvin and Charles S. Jones, who helped guide the firm toward a strategic sale. This transition culminated in 2005 when Activision acquired the studio, a move that reportedly earned original investors over 20 times their initial capital. The Bala brothers eventually departed in 2016 to establish their own venture, Velan Studios.

Throughout its history, the studio became known for technical versatility and hardware innovation. They developed the proprietary game engine Vicarious Visions Alchemy, originally known as Intrinsic Alchemy, following the 2003 acquisition of Intrinsic Graphics. Their portfolio spans a wide range of platforms and genres, including handheld titles for the Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS, such as the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater series and the Guitar Hero franchise. For the latter, they engineered the Guitar Grip peripheral to bring the controller experience to portable gaming.

In 2021, the studio shifted from Activision to Blizzard Entertainment to provide dedicated support for the Diablo franchise, specifically working on Diablo II: Resurrected and Diablo IV. This integration became official in April 2022, when the studio was fully merged and rebranded as Blizzard Albany. The transition also saw a change in leadership, with Simon Ebejer taking over as studio head from Jen Oneal. Shortly after the merger, the studio's quality assurance team made headlines by launching a unionization drive, following a similar movement at Raven Software.
