In short: Founded in 1999 by five former developers, Gearbox Software evolved from porting Half-Life expansions to creating the Borderlands juggernaut. Through strategic acquisitions, high-profile intellectual property management, and a complex history of studio expansion, the company has navigated the volatile landscape of the gaming industry for over two decades.

Established in Frisco, Texas, on February 16, 1999, Gearbox Software began as a small team of 15 developers. Early success came from porting Valve's Half-Life to consoles and developing expansions like Opposing Force. By 2005, the studio shifted toward original intellectual property with the Brothers in Arms franchise, a tactical shooter series that expanded into comics and documentaries. This period of growth culminated in the 2009 release of Borderlands, a genre-blending title that combined role-playing mechanics with first-person shooting. Its signature procedurally-generated loot system, capable of creating millions of unique gear variations, turned the series into a critical and commercial success, selling over 26 million copies by 2015.

The studio's trajectory was marked by both ambitious acquisitions and high-profile controversies. Gearbox secured the rights to Duke Nukem in 2010 after the closure of 3D Realms, eventually releasing Duke Nukem Forever in 2011. Conversely, the 2013 release of Aliens: Colonial Marines resulted in a class-action lawsuit over alleged false advertising, which was settled by publisher Sega in 2014. Despite these hurdles, Gearbox continued to expand, launching Gearbox Publishing in 2015 and establishing a parent company, The Gearbox Entertainment Company, in 2019. This expansion attracted the attention of the Embracer Group, which acquired the company in 2021 for an initial $363 million.

The company's corporate structure underwent further transformation in 2024 when Take-Two Interactive closed its acquisition of Gearbox Entertainment. Now operating as a studio within Take-Two's 2K label, Gearbox maintains its focus on major franchises, including Borderlands and Homeworld. Throughout its history, the studio has balanced internal development with the management of acquired intellectual properties, navigating complex legal disputes and industry shifts. From its humble beginnings in 1999 to its current integration into Take-Two, Gearbox remains a significant player in the evolution of modern gaming, consistently adapting its business model to sustain its flagship titles and creative output.
