In short: Born in the West and rising through trade unionism, Bodo Ramelow became a defining figure in Thuringian politics. As the first leader from The Left to head a German state, his career has been marked by constitutional battles, unconventional coalition politics, and a complex legacy as both a moderate and a provocateur.

Bodo Ramelow, born in 1956, began his career as a retail salesman and union official in West Germany before moving to Thuringia after the 1990 reunification. His political ascent within the Party of Democratic Socialism (PDS) and later The Left culminated in his election as Minister-President of Thuringia in December 2014. This victory was historic, marking the first time The Left had secured the leadership of any German state since reunification.

His tenure was defined by both legislative milestones and intense controversy. In 2003, it was revealed that Germany’s domestic intelligence service had been monitoring him due to alleged past contacts with the German Communist Party. While the Federal Administrative Court initially upheld this surveillance in 2010, the Federal Constitutional Court overturned the decision in 2013, ruling that monitoring a lawmaker without specific evidence of anti-constitutional activity was illegal. This victory solidified his reputation as a moderate voice within his party, though he continued to face criticism for past social media posts, including a 2012 tweet referencing Joseph Stalin.

Ramelow’s political survival was tested during the 2020 Thuringian government crisis. After being briefly unseated by Thomas Kemmerich—whose election relied on votes from the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD)—Ramelow was re-elected in March 2020. His administration also navigated the COVID-19 pandemic, where he initially resisted lockdowns before reversing course in early 2021 as infection rates surged. After losing his majority in the 2024 state election, he was succeeded by Mario Voigt in December 2024, subsequently transitioning to a role in the Bundestag.
