Philipp Amthor, born in Ueckermünde in 1992, entered the Bundestag in 2017 representing the Mecklenburgische Seenplatte I – Vorpommern-Greifswald II constituency. A member of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) since 2008, he has positioned himself firmly within the party's conservative wing. His political platform includes opposition to gender mainstreaming, abortion, and same-sex marriage, while simultaneously identifying as a feminist. He has frequently distanced himself from the right-wing Alternative for Germany (AfD) party.

His rapid ascent was complicated by his involvement with Augustus Intelligence, an IT start-up that raised over 35 million USD from investors despite lacking a marketable product. Between 2018 and 2020, Amthor worked as a lobbyist for the firm and served on its board of directors. In 2020, reports emerged detailing his lobbying efforts on behalf of the company to Chancellor Angela Merkel. The company eventually filed for bankruptcy protection in 2021. This controversy forced Amthor to withdraw his candidacy for the CDU leadership in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in June 2020.

Beyond his policy work, Amthor is known for a distinctively formal, dated speaking style that contrasts sharply with his youth. This persona, coupled with his frequent use of the word 'Schabernack'—meaning tomfoolery or jokery—has made him a frequent target of online mockery. Despite these challenges, he has remained a fixture in German politics, serving in the government of Chancellor Friedrich Merz since 2025 as a Parliamentary State Secretary and later as Minister of State for Federal-State Relations.
