In short: Enclosed by the Liaodong and Shandong peninsulas, the Bohai Sea is the innermost arm of the Yellow Sea. This shallow basin acts as a massive sediment trap for the Huang He, shaping a unique marine environment that has served as a critical maritime corridor for centuries of trade and conflict.

The Bohai Sea, often referred to historically as the Gulf of Chihli, is a shallow marine embayment that forms the northwestern extremity of the Yellow Sea. It is defined by its three primary inlets: Liaodong Bay to the north, Bohai Bay to the west, and Laizhou Bay to the south. Geologically, the region is a submerged portion of the continental shelf, shaped by the meandering path of the Huang He, or Yellow River, which historically deposited vast quantities of silt into the basin during periods of lower sea levels.

Hydrologically, the Bohai Sea is characterized by its relatively low salinity, typically ranging between 30 and 31 parts per thousand, which is lower than the Yellow Sea proper. Its shallow nature makes it highly sensitive to seasonal temperature fluctuations; while summer surface temperatures can reach 82 °F, the innermost coastal sections frequently freeze during the winter months. This extreme seasonal variance, combined with the influx of fresh water from major rivers like the Hai and Luan, creates a dynamic, albeit challenging, environment for navigation and marine life.

Beyond its physical geography, the Bohai Sea is an economic powerhouse. It serves as the center of the Bohai Economic Rim, providing maritime access for major Chinese ports including Tianjin, Dalian, and Qingdao. The region is rich in demersal fish stocks, though these resources face significant pressure from overfishing. Furthermore, the sea floor contains valuable oil reserves, such as the Shengli Field, which have been successfully exploited to support the energy needs of the surrounding industrial provinces. Despite its importance, the sea’s complex biological and physical properties remain a subject of ongoing scientific study.
