The world's largest BMW factory is not in Germany, but in South Carolina
In short: While BMW is a German icon, its most productive manufacturing hub sits in the American South. The Spartanburg plant in Greer, South Carolina, has evolved from a 1994 startup into a global powerhouse, producing hundreds of thousands of crossover SUVs annually and exporting billions of dollars in vehicles worldwide.
The BMW Spartanburg facility in South Carolina represents a massive pivot in the company's global strategy. Announced in 1992 and opened in 1994, the plant was designed to bolster the brand's international production capabilities. By 2010, a $750 million expansion project aimed to increase annual capacity to 240,000 vehicles, positioning the site to become the largest car factory in the United States by employee count. Today, it stands as the highest-volume BMW plant globally, producing the X3, X5, X6, X7, and XM crossover SUVs.
The scale of production is significant. In 2025, the plant manufactured 396,117 vehicles, with a substantial portion destined for international markets. In 2018, approximately 70% of the plant's output was exported to 125 different countries, with China serving as the largest export destination at that time. To manage this volume, the facility relies on a sophisticated logistics network, including rail transport to a nearby dry inland port located 200 miles from the port of Charleston, alongside occasional air freight.
The American market has long influenced BMW's product lineup in unique ways. Due to specific emissions regulations and fuel characteristics, such as the high-sulfur fuel that once necessitated iron engine blocks instead of aluminium, the U.S. has often received different mechanical configurations than other regions. Furthermore, consumer preferences have occasionally driven exclusive offerings, such as the 1970s Bavaria model or specific manual transmission options for the M5 that were unavailable elsewhere. This interplay between local demand and global engineering continues to define the brand's presence in North America.
