In short: Brightline West aims to transform travel between Southern California and Las Vegas, where 50 million people currently endure hours of traffic on Interstate 15. By building a high-speed electric rail line directly into the highway median, the project promises a faster alternative to the notorious weekend congestion and airport delays.

The project, which began development in 2005 as DesertXpress, is now a massive infrastructure undertaking with an estimated cost of $21.5 billion. After years of shifting ownership and planning, Fortress Investment Group acquired the project in 2018. Construction officially broke ground in April 2024, with revenue service now anticipated by September 2029. The line will span from Las Vegas to Rancho Cucamonga, connecting to the Metrolink commuter network to provide access into the Greater Los Angeles area.

Engineering this route requires navigating the challenging terrain of the California High Desert and the steep Cajon Pass, where grades reach up to 6%. To manage these climbs, the service will utilize Siemens American Pioneer 220 trainsets, capable of speeds up to 200 miles per hour. These electric multiple units will be assembled in Horseheads, New York, and are designed to run at 45-minute intervals. The tracks will largely reside within the median of Interstate 15, a design choice that necessitates complex coordination with federal and state agencies.

Environmental considerations have been central to the project's approval. The final Environmental Impact Statement, cleared in July 2023, mandates mitigation measures for wildlife, including the construction of crossings to assist desert bighorn sheep and protective fencing for the desert tortoise. While the project has secured significant federal support—including a $3 billion grant from the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act—the remainder of the funding is expected to be privately financed. As the project moves toward heavy construction in 2026, it represents a rare attempt to establish a privately run, high-speed inter-city rail network in the United States.
