From bankruptcy to the Championship: The turbulent, century-long saga of Bristol City F.C.
In short: Founded in 1894, Bristol City has navigated a rollercoaster history of top-flight highs, financial collapse, and persistent reinvention. Known as The Robins, the club has survived bankruptcy, German air raids, and decades of shifting fortunes to remain a staple of the English football league system for over 130 years.
Bristol City began as Bristol South End in 1894, adopting its current name upon turning professional three years later. The club made history in 1901 by becoming only the third team south of Birmingham to join the Football League. Their early years were marked by rapid success, including a record-breaking Second Division campaign in 1905–06 where they won 14 consecutive games—a feat that remained a record until 2017. By 1907, they were runners-up in the First Division, the only southern club to achieve a top-two finish before World War I.
The club's journey has been defined by extreme volatility. After reaching the 1909 FA Cup final, they endured a 65-year exile from the top flight, eventually returning in 1976. However, the 1980s brought a catastrophic financial collapse. Following three consecutive relegations, the club was declared bankrupt in 1982. Salvation came through the 'Ashton Gate Eight'—senior players who agreed to halve their owed wages to help form a new entity, BCFC (1982) Ltd, allowing the club to survive and eventually climb back through the divisions.
Modern Bristol City has oscillated between League One and the Championship. A major highlight occurred in 2014–15, when the club secured the League One title with a record 99 points and won the Football League Trophy for a third time. Despite recent managerial turnover, including the departure of Liam Manning in 2025 and the appointment of Gerhard Struber, the club continues to compete in the EFL Championship. Throughout these shifts, the club has maintained its identity at Ashton Gate, where they have played since 1904, and kept the 'Robin' badge that symbolizes their enduring connection to the city.
