A century of survival, bankruptcy, and rebirth for Hornchurch Football Club
In short: From a 7 shilling deficit in 1881 to the heights of the National League, the history of Hornchurch is a saga of financial collapse and remarkable resilience. Discover how a club that once folded due to debt managed to eventually conquer the FA Trophy.
The origins of Hornchurch Football Club are marked by early instability. Founded in October 1881, the club's inaugural season ended with a 7 shilling deficit, saved only by a late half-guinea donation from Joseph Fry. By the 1885–86 season, the club had succumbed to a £22 debt and was wound up, leading to the formation of Hornchurch Wanderers. The lineage continued through various iterations, including Upminster Wanderers in 1923 and later Upminster Football Club in 1938.
The club's modern era has been defined by a cycle of promotion and financial crisis. In the 2003–04 season, the club reached the FA Cup second round but suffered a 10-point deduction for entering administration. A subsequent financial collapse in 2004–05 saw the entire squad released, forcing the club to fold. However, the club was quickly reformed as AFC Hornchurch, entering the Essex Senior League on 19 May.
Despite these setbacks, the club achieved historic milestones. In the 2020–21 season, AFC Hornchurch became the first seventh-tier club to win the FA Trophy, defeating Hereford 3–1 in the final. Following a period of significant success, including winning the Premier Division in 2023–24, the club secured promotion to the National League after defeating Torquay United 3–2 in the 2025–26 play-off final.
