Why Britain's new Aurora trains were built shorter to fit into London stations
In short: The British Rail Class 810 Aurora was designed to modernize intercity travel on the Midland Main Line. Yet, these bi-mode trains required a unique engineering compromise: they are two meters shorter than their predecessors to ensure ten-car formations can safely fit within the platforms at London St Pancras station.
The Class 810 Aurora project emerged from a shift in UK transport policy. In 2012, Network Rail planned to electrify the Midland Main Line north of Bedford, but the project was cancelled in 2017 by Transport Secretary Chris Grayling in favor of bi-mode trains. East Midlands Railway subsequently ordered 33 five-car units from Hitachi, funded by Rock Rail East Midlands, to replace aging Class 180 and 222 fleets. The units officially entered service in December 2025, following a series of delays that pushed back the original 2022 target.
Technically, the Aurora is a modified version of the Hitachi Class 802. To meet performance requirements matching the older Class 222 units, engineers added a fourth diesel power pack and uprated each engine to 735 kW. The interior design prioritizes passenger comfort, featuring unique seats developed with Derby-based DGDESIGN. These seats include wider cushions and deeper armrests, addressing feedback from earlier Hitachi models. Every seat provides power and USB access, alongside improved storage and privacy features.
The rollout has faced significant hurdles. By 2026, the fleet encountered reliability and maintenance issues, leading to reduced timetables and industrial tension with the RMT union over safety concerns. Furthermore, in June 2026, unit 810015 was involved in a collision south of Bedford when it was struck by another train. Despite these operational challenges, the fleet remains a central component of East Midlands Railway’s strategy to balance the limitations of non-electrified infrastructure with the need for high-performance intercity connectivity.
