The French estate designed to outshine the Sun King's Versailles
In short: Discover how Chantilly Castle evolved from a royal residence into a masterpiece of landscape engineering and art. This documentary explores the revolutionary techniques used to build its world-first 24-hour fountains and its massive princely stables.
Chantilly Castle served as a home for the descendants of French royalty for centuries, undergoing constant transformation. Its architectural rivalry with Versailles intensified when Louis II de Bourbon-Condé commissioned André Le Nôtre to design a 215-hectare park. Le Nôtre pioneered the world's first fountains capable of running 24 hours a day, utilizing a complex system of 3 kilometers of pipelines and pools.
The estate is also home to the largest princely stables in Europe, featuring 186 meters in length and 18 meters in ceiling height. While it survived multiple demolitions over 800 years, its current status as a treasure of French heritage is largely due to Prince Henry of Orleans, who established the castle's renowned collection of ancient paintings, which is considered the largest outside of the Louvre.
