The fortress city that mastered the art of self-flooding

Building Strasbourg: The City That Challenged Gravity - Full Documentary · 51:59 · Video: Easy Documentary · Watch at the source

In short: Strasbourg is an architectural marvel shaped by centuries of siege warfare and ambition. This documentary explores how the city's unique geography and defensive engineering allowed it to survive as a coveted prize of history.

The city's identity is defined by its Gothic cathedral, a masterpiece that took five generations of builders to complete. Its 142-meter spire stood as the tallest in Christianity for nearly four hundred years.

To survive constant threats from invaders, Strasbourg developed a unique defense: the Vauban Dam. This lock and bridge system allowed the city to intentionally flood nearby upstream neighborhoods to create a barrier against enemies. The documentary also examines the 1870 German annexation, which led to the construction of the Central Station, a pioneering avant-garde design that influenced 20th-century railway architecture.
