From developmental wrestler to the voice of WWE, the evolution of Byron Saxton
In short: Bryan Jesús Kelly, known professionally as Byron Saxton, transformed from an aspiring independent wrestler into a fixture of WWE broadcasting. After failing to make the cut for Tough Enough in 2004, he navigated a decade of developmental circuits and commentary roles to become a recognizable voice on Raw and SmackDown.
Born in Burke, Virginia, and educated at the University of Florida, Kelly began his professional wrestling career on the independent circuit in 2003. By 2007, he signed a developmental contract with World Wrestling Entertainment, initially competing in Florida Championship Wrestling. During his early years, he experimented with various roles, including managing the faction known as the Saxton Conglomerate, before eventually pivoting toward a career in commentary.
His transition to the broadcast booth was gradual. After brief stints on ECW and NXT, he returned to developmental territories before securing a permanent spot on the main roster. By 2014, he was officially announced as a member of the WWE announce team. His role evolved significantly over the following years, moving between Raw, SmackDown, and NXT, often serving as a neutral or babyface commentator who frequently found himself the target of bullying by villainous characters like Corey Graves and John Bradshaw Layfield.
Beyond his commentary work, Saxton has maintained a presence in various facets of the company. He has served as a ring announcer for live events, hosted the network show Tough Talk, and even held the WWE 24/7 Championship for a brief moment in 2021. His career highlights include being ranked 223rd in the PWI 500 in 2011 and participating in high-profile segments, such as receiving a Stone Cold Stunner from Stone Cold Steve Austin at WrestleMania 38 in 2022.
