Cairo: A sprawling metropolis where ancient history meets modern global influence
In short: As the capital of Egypt and the heart of the largest urban agglomeration in the Arab world, Cairo is a city of staggering scale. Home to over 22 million people, this historic center balances its ancient roots with a status as a premier hub for finance, culture, and international diplomacy.
Cairo’s identity is defined by its immense timeline, with roots stretching back to pre-dynastic settlements around 6,000 years ago. While the modern city was officially founded in 969, it incorporates the ancient sites of Memphis, Heliopolis, and the Giza pyramid complex. By the 12th to 16th centuries, under the Ayyubid and Mamluk dynasties, Cairo eclipsed its predecessor, Fustat, to become the primary urban center of the region. Its architectural legacy is so profound that the historic center earned World Heritage status in 1979, and the city is famously dubbed the city of a thousand minarets.
Today, Cairo functions as a vital nexus for global institutions. It hosts the headquarters of the Arab League and regional offices for organizations including the World Health Organization and the United Nations Development Programme. Beyond politics, it serves as a cultural powerhouse, housing Al-Azhar University—one of the world's oldest—and the largest film and music industries in Africa and the Arab world. The city’s influence is further bolstered by its massive consumer market, which continues to attract significant foreign direct investment.
Despite its prestige, Cairo faces the classic challenges of a megacity, including intense traffic and pollution. To manage its massive population, the city relies on the Cairo Metro, which opened in 1987 as Africa's first subway system and now facilitates over 1 billion passenger rides annually. While it was ranked as the top economy in the Middle East in 2005, its economic standing remains robust, with the International Monetary Fund identifying it as the leading economy in Africa as of 2025. It remains a strategic, bustling center of commerce, academics, and the arts.
