The Cadillac V-16 was a masterpiece of engineering that defied the Great Depression's shadow.
In short: Launched in 1930, the Cadillac V-16 was an audacious gamble on luxury during an economic collapse. Despite its immense power and custom-built elegance, the car was a financial drain for General Motors. Yet, it remains one of the most celebrated engineering achievements of the pre-war era, representing a peak of automotive ambition.
Developed in secret starting in 1926, the Cadillac V-16 was designed to be the smoothest and most powerful engine available. When it debuted at the New York City automobile show on January 4, 1930, it featured a pioneering 45-degree V-16 engine displacing 452 cubic inches. The car was marketed as the costliest Cadillac ever, with the 1930 Town Brougham model listed at US$9,200. Every chassis was custom-finished to order, with bodies crafted by the in-house firms Fleetwood and Fisher.
The timing of the launch proved difficult as the Great Depression took hold. While initial production reached 2,000 units by June 1930, sales dropped precipitously thereafter. Cadillac eventually estimated that they lost money on every V-16 sold. Despite the financial losses, the company continued production through 1940, introducing innovations like the Fisher no-draft ventilation system in 1933 and the all-steel Turret Top roof in 1934. By the end of its 11-year run, only 4,076 units had been constructed.
The V-16’s legacy is defined by its extreme exclusivity and size. With a wheelbase of 154 inches and a curb weight reaching 6,600 pounds, these were among the largest standard production cars ever built in the United States. Today, the Classic Car Club of America recognizes all V-16s as Full Classics, a designation reserved for the finest automobiles from 1925 to 1948. Even decades later, the car's influence persisted, inspiring a 2003 concept vehicle that paid homage to the original's design details.
