The Campos Basin: A 115,000 Square Kilometre Engine of Brazil's Offshore Oil Industry
In short: Born from the ancient breakup of Gondwana, the Campos Basin is a massive sedimentary structure stretching across the South Atlantic. Since the first exploratory well was drilled in 1971, this basin has become a cornerstone of global energy, yielding billions of barrels of oil from complex, deep-water geological formations.
The Campos Basin originated between 145 and 130 million years ago during the Cretaceous period, as the supercontinent Gondwana began to fracture. This tectonic shift created a series of rift basins along the South Atlantic margin. By the Early Albian, approximately 112 million years ago, seafloor spreading had reached the area, establishing the basin's foundation. It is defined by its position between the Cabo Frio High to the south and the Vitória High to the north, covering a total area of about 115,000 square kilometres.
The basin's geological complexity is reflected in its stratigraphy, which begins with basalt flows dated to 120 million years ago. These are overlain by the Lagoa Feia Group, containing organic-rich shales and limestones, followed by the marine sediments of the Macaé Formation and the turbidite sandstones of the Campos Formation. These layers have proven to be exceptionally rich in hydrocarbons, with reservoirs ranging from fractured basalts to deep-water sandstones.
Exploration of the basin began in 1968, with the first discovery, the Garoupa field, following in 1974. By 2003, 41 fields had been discovered, with production reaching 1.21 million barrels per day. The basin's cumulative production by that year stood at 3.9 billion barrels, with an estimated 8.5 billion barrels remaining in reserves. While Petrobras has historically led development, the landscape continues to evolve, as evidenced by the 2020 sale of several shallow-water concessions to Trident Energy.
The basin remains a focal point for geological study and industrial activity. Its development has required mastery over extreme environments, with fields located up to 140 kilometres offshore and at water depths reaching 2,400 metres. The ongoing extraction of resources from these diverse reservoirs continues to shape the economic and geological narrative of the Brazilian continental margin.
