The Chinese giant powering the global electric vehicle revolution
In short: With a massive 37% global market share, CATL has become the world's leading manufacturer of lithium-ion batteries. From its roots in Ningde to powering major brands like BMW and Ford, this company is the central engine of the electric vehicle transition, driving rapid technological leaps in energy density and charging speeds.
Founded in 2011 as a spin-off from Amperex Technology Limited, Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited (CATL) has rapidly ascended to become the world's largest manufacturer of electric vehicle and energy storage batteries. Headquartered in Ningde, Fujian province, the company has played a pivotal role in transforming its home city from an impoverished region into a major industrial hub, with Ningde's GDP nearly tripling between 2012 and 2021.
CATL's dominance is fueled by significant early investments in R&D and strategic government subsidies. The company has expanded its reach through diverse partnerships, supplying major automakers including BMW, Tesla, Toyota, and Volkswagen. Its technological innovations include the M3P battery, which uses a magnesium, zinc, and aluminium combination to replace iron, and the Shenxing LFP battery, which allows for a charge from 0 to 80% in just 10 minutes at room temperature.
However, this rapid ascent has not been without geopolitical friction. CATL has faced intense scrutiny from U.S. lawmakers regarding security concerns and potential espionage threats. In 2024, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security was asked to investigate the company under the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act, and by early 2025, the U.S. Department of Defense added CATL to its list of 'Chinese military companies.' Despite these tensions, CATL continues to pursue aggressive international expansion, including massive joint-venture projects in Europe and planned listings on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange to fund growth in markets like Indonesia and Spain.
