In short: Billions of years before the current universe, a sentient entity named the First Firmament created life to cure its own loneliness. From this act of regret emerged two factions: those seeking order and rebels seeking evolution. These rebels became the Celestials—god-like beings who continue to manipulate humanity's genetic destiny.

The origins of the Celestials date back to a pre-Cosmic Order era where the First Firmament was the sole being in existence. To escape unbearable loneliness, it created two types of humanoid servants: the loyal Aspirants and the multicolored rebels. While the Aspirants sought to preserve a static status quo, the rebels desired a dynamic reality where life could evolve, reproduce, and eventually produce superior cosmic beings capable of creating their own universes.

The resulting war between these factions nearly destroyed the first universe. The Aspirants deployed a 25,000-foot tall hyper-weapon called the Godkiller, which decimated billions of Celestials. In a final desperate stand, the Celestials detonated ultimate weapons that tore the First Firmament apart. This cataclysm birthed the Second Cosmos and the first multiverse, where the surviving rebels settled in to begin their vast plan: nurturing transitory life on newborn worlds as they advance toward cosmic evolution.

On Earth, this 'seeding' process began with the Progenitor, a Celestial whose corpse influenced the planet's primordial soup. Subsequent 'Hosts' of Celestials performed genetic experimentation to determine human development, creating three distinct subspecies: Eternals, Deviants, and mutants. While some Celestials like Arishem the Judge oversee planetary survival, others perform specific roles such as Eson the Searcher or Exitar the Exterminator, who destroys life on worlds that fail their tests.

The narrative of these beings is marked by conflict with other cosmic entities. They are often at odds with the Watchers due to a policy of non-interference and serve as instruments for an entity known as the Fulcrum. Recent lore reveals they also mine powerful artifacts, such as Infinity Stones, in a quarry at the end of time.
