In short: Why build a massive steel fortress when you can move faster? The Centauro is an Italian wheeled tank destroyer designed to pack the punch of a main battle tank into a high-speed, cross-country platform. It sacrifices thick plating for strategic agility, allowing it to strike and reposition with precision.

To meet Italian Army needs for a mobile tank destroyer possessing Leopard 1 main battle tank levels of firepower, production of the Centauro began during 1991. It is a collaborative effort between Iveco Fiat, which developed the hull and propulsion, and Oto Melara, responsible for the turrets and weapon systems. Its primary mission is to protect lighter cavalry elements by utilizing a high power-to-weight ratio and an advanced computerized fire control system.

The vehicle's capabilities are defined by its 105 mm L/52 calibre gyro-stabilized gun, which can fire standard NATO ammunition including APFSDS rounds. To maintain mobility despite its heavy armament, it uses an Iveco V6 turbo-charged diesel engine producing 520 hp to drive eight wheels with independent suspension and run-flat inserts. This configuration allows the Centauro to exceed road speeds of 100 km/h, negotiate gradients up to 60%, and ford water depths of 1.5 m without preparation.

Survival depends upon sophisticated electronics, even though its basic chassis resists shell fragments and 14.5 mm bullets (plus 25 mm on the front). It features a Galileo Avionica TURMS fire control system—the same used in the Ariete tank—complete with a thermal imager, laser rangefinder, and a digital ballistic computer. These tools enable the crew to engage moving targets accurately from either stationary or mobile positions, day or night.

The platform has seen diverse global utility, from escorting convoys in Somalia and Iraq to long-range strikes in Ukraine, where it was praised for its internal communications and accuracy. Recent developments include the Centauro 2, a 30-ton successor based on the Freccia chassis. This new variant features a 720 hp engine and hydro-pneumatic suspension specifically engineered to handle the high recoil of a 120 mm cannon, which typically limits wheeled vehicles with fewer wheels.
