How a simple railroad stop became a thriving college town in South Carolina
In short: Named for its strategic position exactly halfway between Atlanta and Charlotte, Central, South Carolina, was born from the 1873 rail boom. Though it nearly vanished when the railroad moved its headquarters in 1897, the town reinvented itself as an educational hub, now housing thousands of students and historic landmarks.
The town of Central owes its existence to the Atlanta and Richmond Air-Line Railway. Incorporated in 1875, it served as a vital mid-point for travelers and freight between two major southern cities. This prosperity was short-lived; by 1897, the Southern Railway relocated its primary operations to Greenville. Without the necessity of stopping to change engines, the town faced a sudden economic decline as its shops and offices shuttered.
Central avoided becoming a ghost town through the arrival of new institutions. The establishment of the Issaqueena Mill and the 1906 founding of the Wesleyan Methodist Bible Institute—now Southern Wesleyan University—provided a new foundation for the local economy. Today, the town maintains a strong connection to its past, with several commercial buildings from the turn of the 20th century still standing downtown, and sites like the Central Roller Mills listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
In recent decades, the town has experienced significant demographic shifts. The population grew from 3,522 in 2000 to 5,247 by the 2020 census. This expansion is largely driven by the development of large apartment complexes catering to students from Southern Wesleyan University, Tri-County Technical College, and the nearby Clemson University. Despite this modern growth, the town retains a small-town character, governed by a mayor and six council members, and remains deeply integrated into the broader Greenville–Mauldin–Easley metropolitan region.
