The accidental genre born from a satirical blog post
In short: In 2009, a satirical blog post coined a term meant to lampoon indie acts. Instead, it birthed chillwave: a dreamy, lo-fi movement that used vintage synthesizers and heavy reverb to turn 1980s nostalgia into a digital-age phenomenon.
Arising during the late 2000s, chillwave represented an early musical style to evolve mainly via the Internet. In 2009, the satirical blog Hipster Runoff created the label to parody microgenres mimicking 1980s VHS incidental music. The blog's manager, a pseudonymous user named Carles, admitted he was simply throwing silly names at a post to see which one would stick.
The sound is defined by a faded, dreamy retro-pop aesthetic, often featuring slow-to-moderate tempos, mellow vocals, and heavy reverb. Artists like Washed Out, Neon Indian, and Toro y Moi became the movement's vanguard. The most iconic anthem of the movement is Washed Out's 2009 release, 'Feel It All Around'. Though lacking a specific birthplace, the scene thrived along the U.S. eastern and southern coasts, notably in Brooklyn, New York.
Despite its popularity, the term became a pejorative. Critics used "chillwave" to dismiss the music as shallow or a cynical rebranding of the more experimental "hypnagogic pop." By the mid-2010s, the scene had largely faded as original artists and listeners moved toward other styles. However, its influence endured through the rise of vaporwave, an ironic variant that expanded on chillwave's use of retro cultural nostalgia.
The genre's roots are debated. While some see it as a successor to shoegaze or dream pop, others point to earlier influences like the Beach Boys' 1970 track "All I Wanna Do" or the work of Boards of Canada. Some even credit Animal Collective's 2007 solo release by Panda Bear, "Person Pitch," with launching the specific chillwave style.
