Why Indonesia's Steel City is a vital industrial powerhouse on the edge of Java
In short: Known as the Steel City, Cilegon is a critical industrial hub on the northwest coast of Java. Producing millions of tons of steel annually, it serves as a cornerstone of the Indonesian economy. Beyond its factories, this coastal city faces unique demographic shifts and complex social dynamics in its urban landscape.
Located on the mouth of the Cilegon River along the Sunda Strait, Cilegon occupies a strategic position in Banten province. Covering 162.51 square kilometres, the city functions as a semi-enclave surrounded by the Serang Regency. Its climate is defined by a distinct tropical pattern, with a wet season stretching from October to May and a dry season that peaks in August, when rainfall drops to an average of 71 millimetres.
The city's identity is inextricably linked to heavy industry. As the largest steel producer in Southeast Asia, Cilegon generates approximately 6 million tons of steel every year within the Krakatau Steel Industrial Zone. This zone hosts a dense concentration of vital state assets, including the Asahimas Chemical Company, power plants like PLTU Suralaya, and water treatment facilities. These entities form the backbone of the local economy, drawing in a significant migrant population that fueled a 47.18% growth rate between 1991 and 2005.
Despite its rapid economic development and a population that reached 470,378 by mid-2023, the city maintains a distinct social character. In 2019, the city recorded 382 mosques and 287 musallas, yet it lacked any official churches, Hindu temples, or Buddhist viharas. This absence persists despite the presence of thousands of non-Muslim residents, including 6,740 Protestants and 1,743 Catholics. Tensions regarding religious infrastructure remain visible, as seen in the rejection of a proposed Batak Protestant Christian Church, which necessitates that many residents travel to neighbouring Serang for religious services.
