In short: Chuncheon, the capital of Gangwon Province, is a mountainous basin city defined by its rivers and hydroelectric power. Beyond its geography, it is famous for dak-galbi, a spicy chicken stir-fry born from a creative kitchen improvisation that eventually transformed the city into a global destination for food and festivals.

Nestled at the confluence of the Soyang and Bukhan rivers, Chuncheon has been inhabited since the Paleolithic Age. Throughout its long history, the region has shifted through various administrative names, including Chun-ju and Sak-ju, before becoming the provincial capital in 1896. Its modern identity was forged in the aftermath of the Korean War, during which the city sustained heavy damage before being reconstructed into the modern hub it is today.

The city's economy is heavily service-oriented, supported by a robust infrastructure of hydroelectric dams—including the Soyang Dam, once the largest rockfill dam in East Asia—and extensive transportation links to Seoul. While mountainous terrain covers over 90% of the area, limiting traditional agriculture, the city has successfully pivoted toward cultural tourism. It hosts a diverse array of international events, ranging from the Chuncheon Mime Festival, considered one of the world's three major mime gatherings, to the Chuncheon Puppet Festival and the Legoland Korea Resort.

Chuncheon's most recognizable cultural export, dak-galbi, originated in the 1960s when a restaurant owner substituted chicken for pork. This accidental invention evolved into a regional staple, eventually spawning the famous Myeongdong Dakgalbi Alley. This spirit of adaptation extends to the city's broader cultural landscape, where festivals honoring local novelists like Gim Yujeong coexist with modern sports facilities and a thriving animation industry. Today, with a population of about 290,000, the city remains a unique intersection of ancient history, industrial innovation, and a vibrant, festival-driven economy.
