In short: Since 2021, Nike and Major League Baseball have collaborated to create alternate uniforms that celebrate the unique cultural heritage of each team's home city. These jerseys break from traditional team aesthetics, using bold color schemes and local iconography to foster a deeper connection between the franchise and its community.

The City Connect program represents a shift in how professional sports teams engage with local identity. Each design is meticulously crafted to incorporate specific regional markers, ranging from architectural landmarks to historical nicknames. For instance, the Washington Nationals utilized an anthracite base with cherry blossom patterns to honor the city's famous festival, while the Detroit Tigers adopted a navy blue gradient to pay homage to the region's automotive history. These uniforms are not merely aesthetic changes; they serve as visual storytelling tools that bridge the gap between a team's professional brand and the daily life of its local fans.

The rollout of these uniforms has been systematic, with teams debuting new looks in waves. Seven teams launched their designs in 2021, followed by seven in 2022, six in 2023, and nine in 2024. By 2025, the program began to evolve further, with teams like the Arizona Diamondbacks and Boston Red Sox introducing second-generation designs. The Diamondbacks' 2025 uniform incorporates elements from their entire franchise history since 1998, while the Red Sox's 'Fenway Greens' design draws direct inspiration from the iconic Green Monster at Fenway Park, even referencing the 1912 opening year inside the collar.

Despite the program's popularity, it remains distinct from traditional team apparel. Teams are permitted to rotate in new designs every three years, allowing for constant evolution. Interestingly, while there are no league rules prohibiting their use during high-stakes games, no team has worn a City Connect uniform during postseason play. Currently, 27 of the 30 MLB teams participate in the program. The New York Yankees, the Athletics, and the Chicago Cubs—following the 2024 discontinuation of their specific design—are the only franchises without a City Connect uniform, highlighting the voluntary and curated nature of this modern sports branding initiative.
