A futuristic cultural complex built on a drained riverbed in Valencia, Spain
In short: Rising from the former bed of the Turia River, the City of Arts and Sciences is a sprawling architectural marvel. Designed by Santiago Calatrava and Félix Candela, this complex blends science, art, and nature, serving as both a major tourist destination and a frequent backdrop for futuristic film and television productions.
The City of Arts and Sciences emerged from a 1957 flood that forced the rerouting of the Turia River. What was once a riverbed became a sunken park, providing the foundation for a project originally conceived in 1989. Initially commissioned as a science and technology center, the project underwent significant changes after a 1996 government shift. The original plan for a communications tower was scrapped in favor of an opera house, and the scope expanded to include an oceanographic park designed by Félix Candela.
The complex is defined by a strong longitudinal axis that connects its various structures, including L'Hemisfèric, the Museu de les Ciències Príncipe Felipe, and the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía. Architects Santiago Calatrava and Félix Candela utilized reinforced concrete and the traditional Valencian ceramic mosaic technique known as trencadis to create a cohesive aesthetic. Water serves as a central element, reflecting the structures and creating the illusion of a unified, futuristic landscape.
Construction began in July 1996 and continued until the completion of L'Àgora in 2009. While the project was initially budgeted at 300 million euros in 1991, the final cost reached 1,200 million euros, sparking controversy and debate over its economic impact. Despite these financial tensions, the site has become a cultural landmark, generating thousands of jobs and serving as a versatile location for international media, from science fiction series like Westworld and Doctor Who to major film productions.
