In short: Ekurhuleni translates to 'place of peace' in XiTsonga, yet its townships were once battlegrounds for intense political violence. Today, this industrial powerhouse serves as the 'workshop of the country,' hosting the world's largest single-site precious metals refinery and South Africa's busiest international airport.

Established in 2000, the City of Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality was formed through a massive merger of several local entities, including the Eastern Gauteng Services Council and the municipalities of Boksburg, Germiston, and Kempton Park. While its name alludes to tranquility, the region's history is marked by the severe political clashes between the ANC and the Inkatha Freedom Party during the early 1990s, just before South Africa's first non-racial elections in 1994.

Economically, the municipality is a vital engine for South Africa. It contributes 32% of the nation's manufacturing production and 11% of its Gross Value Added (GVA). The Rand Refinery, located within the city, represents the planet's most extensive single-site facility for smelting and refining precious metals. This industrial significance is supported by a massive logistics network, including the largest rail hub used by Transnet and the presence of OR Tambo International Airport.

The landscape is a mix of high-altitude plateau and rich natural features, with elevations ranging from 1552 to 1772 metres. The area contains significant ecological sites, such as the 1858-hectare Blesbokriver wetland and the Bullfrog Pan, which supports over 150 bird species. However, the municipality also faces modern challenges, including investigations into municipal corruption and allegations of rogue police units involved in serious crimes.

Governance is structured under a 224-member council using mixed-member proportional representation. As of the 2016 census data, the population reached over 3.3 million people, with a workforce of 1.6 million, of which 28.8% were unemployed. Despite its industrial weight, the city's political landscape remains complex, as seen in the 2021 elections where no single party secured a majority.
