In short: In 1603, the Scottish crown declared the name MacGregor officially abolished. Those who bore it faced death, forcing the clan into hiding, where they were hunted with bloodhounds. For nearly two centuries, this royal decree turned a proud Highland family into outlaws, scattered across the landscape under assumed names.

The persecution of Clan Gregor began in earnest following a 1603 conflict at Glen Fruin. After the execution of two clansmen, Alasdair MacGregor led a force of over 400 men against the Colquhouns. The resulting slaughter of over 200 Colquhouns prompted King James VI to issue an edict that effectively outlawed the MacGregor identity. The legislation was severe: anyone bearing the name was required to renounce it or face execution. By 1604, the chief and eleven of his men were hanged in Edinburgh, with the chief suspended a full height above his kinsmen as a final display of state power.

The legal erasure of the clan was codified by the Scottish Parliament in 1617, which mandated that no descendant could ever again use the name MacGregor under pain of death. This forced the clan to adopt aliases, including names like Murray or Grant, and they became known as the Children of the Mist due to their displacement. Despite this, the clan maintained a fierce, if complicated, loyalty to the crown, even fighting for the royalist cause during the Scottish Civil War. Charles II repealed the proscription in 1661, but it was reinstated by William of Orange in 1693 and remained in effect until 1774.

The clan's resilience is perhaps best embodied by the legendary Rob Roy MacGregor, who lived from 1671 to 1734. Forced to use his mother's surname of Campbell, he became a symbol of resistance, raiding government interests and leading the clan during the Jacobite risings. It was not until the late 18th century that the legal barriers were fully dismantled. Today, the clan's motto, 'Royal is my race', reflects their ancient, if contested, claims of descent from the royal house of Alpin, a legacy that survived centuries of state-sanctioned attempts to wipe them from history.
